His Beach

“SERIOUSLY DUDE, WHAT was that?” Rick growled at his friend.

“Just giving you a gentle push.” Andy smiled.

“She’s a client.” Rick exclaimed in frustration.

“So you keep saying.” Andy said.

“I don’t even like her. Not like that. I mean she’s alright and all, but. Why are we even having this conversation? She’s the one refusing to sell me back my family home.” Rick said in exasperation.

“Dude, you’ve never even lived there.” Andy said his voice taking on a rare tone of seriousness.

“That’s not the point, it’s still my home. Besides Andy, you invited her to my spot.” Rick said in exasperation.

“True, I did do that.” Andy said.

He looked less than apologetic.

“You know how I feel about my spot.” He said.

“I do.” Andy admitted, “But to be fair you’re the one who convinced her to come. She was happy to stay home.”

“There are a dozen other places we could have gone.” Rick said, “Why didn’t you pick one of those?”

“I don’t know. Why’d you almost kiss Katy?” He asked, his face still deadpan.

“I didn’t almost..” Rick started, though his mind was wandering back to the feel of her lips on his finger, and wondering what they’d feel like to kiss.

“Sure you didn’t. If I hadn’t been there the two of you would have simply shaken hands and parted as contractor and client, nothing more, nothing less.” Andy said doubtfully, “Dude I haven’t seen you so goo-goo around a chick since Portia, and even then you weren’t like this. It’s like one of those cheesy Hallmark movies they’ve started bringing out on Netflix, which of course I have never, nor will I ever watch.”

“What are you going on about?” Rick asked.

“You open doors for her.” Andy said.

“And what.”

“You stayed to help her clean up.” Andy added.

“I’m just making sure the house isn’t a mess, besides you stayed behind and helped too.” Rick said.

“You took her to church.” Andy said.

“I’d take you too if you’d let me.”

“You introduced her to your parents.” Andy said.

Andy had him there. Rick was, for better or worse, protective of his parents, and he had gone out of his way to introduce Katy to them.

He shrugged rather than answering his friend.

“She is cute.” Andy said, still grinning.

Cute wasn’t the word Rick would use for her. When he’d first met her he would have said fiery, or irritating. Then he’d seen the way she’d interacted with his guys during the build and he would have said kind. After he saw her exhausted and emotional he would have said she was hardworking and strong. Finally, he’d seen her this morning all sleep ruffled and... well, then there was that dress... he sighed. The one word that came to mind when he saw her was sexy. It wasn’t like he was dead or anything, he still noticed when a good looking woman entered the room, but he was supposed to be past all that hormonal teenage stuff, and since Portia left he could honestly say he hadn’t really been bothered by the fairer sex.
